SWEET CASHEW!!
Her Questions:
Are there any "extra" precautions that should be taken depending on specific job duties...and after reading that, I am freaked and don't know that I should say anymore. And also, is it "ok" to discuss one on one with a trusted friend in IM...things such as where he is based, being deployed to...anything that he is free to tell me? I'm freaking now, because I had a friendship with a guy in the Navy years ago, and now remember the omsbudsman not being able to tell me things on IM, she had to call on the phone. (Info about ports of call and dates...) but are "general" things "ok"? I know IMs are not particularly secure, but I never knew about these rules before, and just thought anything he can tell me is not "secure" information. So, thank you...I learned something today!
First off, you determine your own need to know. If your b/f has many "secret" functions he performs daily, you should keep those secret. Don't tell information that could possibly lead an enemy to your man or that could potentially cause grave damage to the US.
Secondly, it is okay to talk to a friend on IM about stuff. This is especially true if you personally know the person. Always remember need to know! If you do not feel comfortable giving out certain details, then don't do it. Protect any information that you feel might be dangerous if it goti nto the wrong hands! If you do not know the person in person just be careful what y ou talk about. You never know who the enemy is.
Third, read the security page at:
http://www.militaryissuedgirlfriends.com/security.htm
It should give you a good definition of classified, unclassified and sensitive information. And if you have any more questions about what these different types of information include, just ask in here!
Lastly, OPSEC isnt' meant to scare you, it's here to protect information and people. OPSEC is a set of guidelines to help you.
