What is the reputation system?
User Reputation in its simplest form is a ranking of a user's benefit to the community. Its basis comes from the opinions of all of MIG's users that choose take part in it. Users gain and lose reputation based on how their posts are scored by other forum participants. Users with the ability to affect reputation, will either give or take aways points by approving or disapproving with a post's content.

How do I give reputation?
Giving reputation is easy and fun. To give reputation all you need to do is click the button that looks like this:

This button will take you to a screen that asks you to approve or disapprove the topic. You click Approve or Disapprove and give a brief description of why you agree or disagree with them.

Good Comments include:
"Your post was very supportive, thanks!"
"I do not like the way you put down that member."
"Your post was informative."

Bad Comments include:
"You suck"
"Awesome"
"Way to go"

Comments are not required, but are encouraged.

When to give reputation?
You should approve a post when:

1. Posts that members are being supportive.
2. Posts that give helpful or valuable information.
3. Posts that go above and beyond.

You should disapprove a post when:

1. A member is being unsupportive.
2. A member is being mean, cruel or otherwise unfriendly.
3. Posts that violate our Rules and Regulation.

Examples Include:

Times when you should approve:

1. "I'm still fairly new at all of this too. you've come to the right place though, all of the girls here are amazing, and really supportive when you need it. "
2. "I completely understand how you feel, I went through that exact situation last year. I'll PM you with my story and we can talk about it."
3. "I'll be there too, it opens at 8am, so make sure you get there early because it tends to get crowded in the mornings."

Don't approve a post for:

1. "Why do you even post here, your opinion means nothing."
2. "Your post makes no sense, why did you post that."
3. "You have it so easy, why are you even on here, you don't need support like we do."

It's your decision, but the reputation system is to reward members with good posts, not just to boost their reputation points.

All about Negative Reputation
Positive reputation can be used for many things, but negative reputation has a more specific purpose.

Times when giving negative reputation is acceptable:

1. When a member hurts another member, or when feelings have been hurt.
2. When members are being unsupportive.
3. When posts violate our rules and regulations.

Negative reputation should be not given for:

1. Posts from another person who gave you negative reputation. This is just retaliating!
2. Posts that you disagree with.
3. Posts that attack an idea, not a specific member.

Examples Include:
Negative reputation SHOULD be given for:

1. "You are an idiot, why don't you get out of here"
2. "You don't need our support, everyone here has it worse than you do"

Negative Reputation SHOULD NOT be given for:

1. "I disagree with that statment, I don't think that skunks are pretty animals."
2. "This idea would never work, it's just not possible. There is no sound evidence behind it." If you believe you were given Negative reputation for a invalid reason, please contact an Administrator or Moderator, NOT the person who gave you the reputation.

What are points and how do they work?
Reputation Level Points – These points are represented by a series of bars under your name, and represent your rank in the community.

Reputation Power Points – This amount of points represents your ‘weight’ of points that you give/take away. Power Points are derived from several factors including; post count, days registered, and how many Level points you have. When you give someone Positive reputation, then you add your amount of power points to the poster’s Level points. When you give Negative reputation, it subtracts half of your total power points from the poster’s Level points.

Here are some examples:

Member A gives Member B Positive reputation. Member A’s Power points are added to Member B’s Level points.

Member A gives Member B Negative reputation. Member A’s Power points are halved, and then subtracted from Member B’s Level points.

What are the reputation level images and what do they mean?
Positive: Each is up to 100 (max of 5), each is 200, which you start to receive after you get all 5 of the 100 bars, each is 550, which you start to receive after you get all 5 of the 200 bars, and lastly each is 10,000, which you start to receive after you get all 9 of the 550 bars. When you receive a gold star, your reputation green/purple pips will disappear and as you gain reputation, they will re-build just as they had before, until you receive another gold star. Then the process repeats. Many staff members have this, please see their profiles for a visual of this description.
All members start with 10 points.

Negative: Each is up to -100. Each is up to -200. There are also for very bad members.

Full ranks are as follows:

-501 to -700 =
-401 to -500 =
-301 to -400 =

Reputation Powers
Power points are calculated in the following manner:

You will remain at 0 Power points until you meet the following conditions:
You have at least 10 posts AND at least 10 Reputation Level points.

Once you start gaining Power points:
For every 30 days, users gain 1 Power point.
For every 100 posts, users gain 1 point of power point.
For every 100 Level points of reputation, users gain 1 power point.
The maximum amount of Power Points is 100.
Generally, Power points are about 1% of total Level points, up to 100 power points.

How often can I use the reputation system?
You may give out up to 10 total reputations per day. However, you have to give reputation to at least 3 different members before you can give it to the same member again. Closed Threads do not accept reputation.

Here’s an example:
Member A gives Member B Positive reputation. Member A must now give reputation to at least 3 other members before he can give Member B reputation again.

How do I see who contributed to my reputation?
To check who has given you reputation, head into your “User CP”.

On this screen, you will see it broken down by who gave you the reputation, if it was Positive, Negative or zero. Zero comments are generally given by user’s who do not have enough reputation/posts to actually give reputation. You can’t see the actual amount they gave you, this is by design. If you disagree with any reputation comments, please contanct an Administrator or Moderator, and NOT the person who gave you the negative reputation.
